From December 7 to 15, Hermès brings the Mystery at the Grooms’, a playful and interactive experience showcasing the boundless creativity of the house’s sixteen métiers. Visitors will use their quick wits and ingenuity to find clues and solve a mystery as they plunge into a universe built around Hermès objects, all stitched together by a common inspirational thread that spans generations: the horse.
“Playing means being together. Play is movement, freedom, imagination, fantasy, lightness... and the horse is our first companion in the playground of creation,” says Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Artistic Director of Hermès.
As they set out to solve this curious case, visitors will discover a diverse panorama of Hermès objects from across the eras, a reflection of the house’s imagination and the timelessness of its craftsmanship; present or past, these are objects designed to last, to be repaired and passed on. Abundant, innovative and singular, these Hermès creations become the centrepieces of this lighthearted experience where guests-turned-Hermès-detectives are asked to examine the familiar and the mysterious in a different light. A word to the wise: following the hoofprints – either literal or implied – on each of these objects will be the key to unravelling this mystery...
Hermès’ equestrian heritage, the throughline that allows for constantly renewed inspiration, hits its full stride at the Grooms’ House. This theatrical set within Shanghai’s West Bund Dome transports visitors to a mysterious residence where the Grooms live with their equine friends. Inside, the sixteen Hermès métiers converge for the very first time, united by creative boldness, a shared artisan spirit and their exceptional savoir-faire. From leather goods, whose Hermès Della Cavalleria Mini bag evokes a saddle, to silk, the Brides de gala scarf flying its bridle motif, and shoes, with one pair that leaves prints shaped like horseshoes, each métier contributes unique creations with ties to the horse. Other historic Hermès pieces, such as the Kelly rocking horse, also join the fun.
Now, the Grooms have opened the doors to guests, but upon their arrival, it becomes clear that mischief is afoot; the Grooms’ herd of horses has disappeared! Could they be hiding among the Hermès objects that adorn the set? It’s up to the house’s visitors to investigate a trail of scattered clues to track them down. And the clock is ticking...
While the players search high and low for every hidden horse, the voice of renowned equestrian detective Mr Honoré, who just so happens to bear the name of the street in Paris where Hermès’ original store is located, guides them from afar. Whether it’s Ringlet, who might be peeking out from behind giant carrots in the hay bales of the Pantry, or Clip-Clop, who could be curled up beneath a Rocabar blanket in the Dormitory, the horses of this sneaky herd have no shortage of hiding places throughout the house’s nine rooms.
From inquisitive younglings (age 10 and above) to seasoned old hands, everyone can become an Hermès detective, solve the case and take part in the fun.
