Over the Chinese New Year, Hainan's offshore duty-free shopping was a major draw. Haikou Customs reported that from February 10th to 17th, 2024, during the holiday, the total sales hit 2.489 billion yuan, with nearly 298,000 shoppers spending an average of 8,358 yuan each.
"Besides the sun and the beach, duty-free shopping was a big reason for my Sanya trip," shared Ms. Lin from Shanghai. "I snagged a Saint Laurent bag at a bargain, thanks to government vouchers and extra store points, saving over three thousand yuan compared to mall prices. Skincare and perfumes were even better deals."
Duty-free shopping has become synonymous with a visit to Hainan, thanks to the industry's growth. Services like "buy and pickup immediately" have improved the shopping experience. The end of last December saw the launch of the Global Beauty Plaza in the CDF Sanya International Duty-Free City, making it a tourist hotspot.
To streamline the pickup process for seaport shoppers, Haikou Port Customs optimized staff allocation, ensuring smooth operations during the festival. A spokesperson from Haikou Customs highlighted efforts to mitigate stock pressures during the tourist season and Chinese New Year, including overtime shifts for dedicated reviews of duty-free goods processing and expedited product channels. This initiative guaranteed that duty-free items were readily available, enhancing the shopping experience for visitors.
